1990 -Howard and Robin love this movie.  He likes to compare crazy fans to Kathy Bates in this movie.  James Taylor was in studio, and one of Howard’s interns asked him to lunch.  Howard reminded James of what happens in this movie.  Riley Martin was on the phone telling jail stories, and Robin said it sounded like this movie.

James Caan was in studio and  Howard asked him about Misery which he thinks is one of the best movies ever, and probably James Caan’s best performance. James didn’t think so  Howard asked him about Jack Nicholson turning down the role.  James said it was right after The Shining.Howard also said he heard he’d turned it down because Kathy Bates was the real star of the movie.  James said that Warren Beatty turned it down, saying they needed more of a man to play that part.  Howard asked him if he was upset that Kathy won an Oscar and he didn’t.  He said she should have won and he wasn’t upset.  He said they had a great time making that movie.  Howard asked him what he did to scream like that when he got his feet beaten, and he said he just screamed.  He said they took out all of the violence that was in the Stephen King book and put it all in the viewer’s head, which was much scarier.

During the “Sal Planning to Sleepover at Howard’s House” episode, the movies Misery, King of Comedy and Single White Female are referenced.  Howard kept telling Sal to watch King of Comedy so Sal can see what he’s turning into.  Fred played the clip from Misery, when she breaks James Caan’s legs, and they say that’s Sal.

Shuli had tape of his talking to Underdog Lady and Howard said she was falling in love with Shuli.  Shuli said if they ever did get together, it would probably turn out like Misery.
