Star Trek (2009)

2009 – Howard and Robin loved this movie.  Said they took the Star Trek story back to the beginning, and each of the characters embodied the Star Trek characters when they were young perfectly.  They showed how each one came to their temperament and relationships with each other.  J.J. Abrams called in to the show while he was making it, and they told him the casting of Spock, Zach Quinto from the TV series Heroes,  was genius.  Howard said that William Shatner was furious he wasn’t asked to be in this one, as Leonard Nimoy does have a small part.  J.J. didn’t think he was really that mad, but Howard disagreed and played a clip when William Shatner was in studio.  J.J. said that he was such a huge Star Trek fan, he didn’t want to throw William Shatner in the film just to have him in the film- that would make it not a serious remake.  It made sense that Leonard Nimoy as an older Spock would be there, because he’d died before and came back in another film, so the fact that he could be there at some point actually made sense.  In 2013, JJ was in studio again to plug the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.  Howard again said how amazing this movie was, and he’s really looking forward to the new one.

Howard talked to JJ Abrams at Jimmy Kimmel’s wedding in 2013 about the new Star Wars  and Howard wanted to give him his two cents on making the new movie, so he told him to bring C3Po back.  Robin wonders how he’s going to clean up the Star Wars mess, but Howard said he was able to clean up the Star Trek mess and did a great job.

DeForest Kelley was talking about his career before Star Trek and said he usually played a heavy and was in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral . William Shatner also talked with Howard about his disappointment of not being cast in the new Star Trek movie, especially now that he knows Leonard Nimoy is going to be in it.  Shatner just had lunch with Leonard, and he refused to tell him how they’re going to fit his character into this new reboot of Star Trek.

A caller asked George what he thought about the new Sulu.  George thought he was good, and he really likes him as a person, but after Howard asked, said he could work out more.  He doesn’t have good abs.

William Shatner was in studio, and they talked about Star Trek. Howard asked him if he was upset that he wasn’t cast in the new JJ Abrams Star Trek like Leonard Nimoy, and he said no.  He said he’d told Leonard that you know you’re old when you play your character back in time and you’re still old.  When they talked about JJ Abrams getting to also direct Star Wars – which Shatner had said was kind of gluttonous to do both, Shatner explained that he’d meant they were actually competing stories and it didn’t seem right to do both.
