Twilight Zone, The (TV Series)

1959 – 1964

Howard was talking about one of the old Twilight Zone shows about the Talking Tina doll that kills people, and said it freaked him the fuck out.  He said when he was 7 he used to sneak cigars in the basement and would hide the stogies in a box his sister had for her doll in that was the Talking Tina doll, and he always was scared that it would come to life.

George Takei is in studio this week.  Howard said he saw him in an old episode of Twilight Zone last weekend and asked him if that’s how he got the role in Star Trek.  He said no, that it was his roles in Playhouse 90 that had great plays like Requiem for a Heavyweight, written by Rod Serling that got him the role.  In the Twilight Zone episode (one of the few not written by Rod Serling) he played a man who was hired by this whacky Neville Brand to work up in his attic.  George Takei finds a samurai sword there and he starts acting whacky, too.  George said it was only shown once on network TV and it was pulled.  It has just now been released.  The show was on the air shortly after WW2, and the networds didn’t think the American public was ready for all the racial undertones in the show.

Robin’s news about a woman who tried to find her adopted son only to find out he’d been killed. Howard said was like an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Howard said Robert Duvall sent him a cowboy hat, and it’s not a good look for him. He said when he wears it, he looks like he’s out of the Twilight Zone’s episode, To Serve Man.
